Introduction

Welcome to the Fundamentals of Human Anatomy Laboratory Manual! This lab manual is designed to accompany a college-level systemic human anatomy laboratory course taken by students early in pre-health related programs of study. It is organized by week, with each chapter providing the necessary background information for the lab activities that will be done that week. The first couple weeks of lab explore introductory information, including anatomical terminology, cells, and tissues. The remaining weeks of the semester are spent going through the organ systems in the human body. The lab activities should be done in lab, based on the human models and dissections provided.

This manual will provide the necessary support for students in a human anatomy laboratory course to:

  1. Communicate effectively about anatomical positions, locations and features using a proper anatomical vocabulary.
  2. Describe the basic features of animal cells and tissues and explain how the structure of cells and tissues determine the function of the organs that they comprise.
  3. Describe the divisions and compartments of the human body and the structures they contain.
  4. Identify the major anatomical structures associated with each body system and describe their basic functions.
  5. Use proper laboratory technique to dissect preserved animal specimens to explore anatomy.
