Chapter 2: What is Technical Communication?

Section 2.7 Working with Subject Matter Experts

Subject-Matter Experts (SMEs)

If you study to be a technical writer or technical communicator, you will hear the acronym SMEs, or Subject Matter Experts. A SME is someone who is an expert in a particular subject, such as Civil Engineering or Software Engineering. As technical communicators, you need to be working with SMEs closely to create content that is accurate and reaches the needs of the audience or user. SMEs help you to understand subject matter fields that you are not an expert in, so you can create the content needed.

SMEs may also review your content for accuracy, and many times you will work closely with SMEs through the life of a project. This means that a lot of Technical Communication is collaborative in nature.

Below are a few roles and responsibilities of a Subject Matter Expert:
  • Training and Development:

SMEs play a crucial role in developing training materials and programs, ensuring accuracy and relevance.

  • Consultation and Advice:

They provide expert advice to individuals and organizations on matters related to their area of expertise.

  • Quality Assurance:

SMEs help ensure that products, services, or processes meet specific standards and requirements.

  • Process Improvement:

They identify areas for improvement and contribute to the development of more efficient and effective processes.

  • Knowledge Sharing:
SMEs share their expertise with others, fostering a culture of learning and development within an organization.
