About OER Development in Pressbooks

Supplemental Resources

Adapted from Fanshawe OER Design Studio

Open textbook authors should consider adding additional or supplemental resources to their textbook whenever possible. Traditional textbooks often provide instructors with resources like slides, test banks, image banks and videos. You can choose to provide content like this within your book, or you can provide access through the Digital Press’ learning materials collection for external instructors

Ancillary resources that can be easily integrated into your OER project include:

Adding features that will make it easier for instructors to integrate your book into their teaching will increase the likelihood that it will be adopted or adapted.

Slide Decks

Slide decks can be loaded into the back matter of your book for review by students and/or other instructors. Slide decks should be relatively basic and take into consideration the learning outcomes and key points of each unit. Faculty may further customize the decks to suit their course needs.

Instructors Guide

An instructor’s guide can be developed to include ideas for in-class activities, or assessments. This might be published separately or provided as an additional resource for your published textbook.

H5P

Authors can develop H5P exercises based on the content in their book to help students review concepts covered in the readings. See the section on H5P for more information about the types of activities available and how to integrate them into your book.

The author or other faculty can create test banks for their OER. Our team does not create test bank questions for you. However, we can connect you with instructional designers at CELT to discuss best practices for designing assessments for your course.
