10.0 Drugs, Pesticides, and Biologics for Aquatic Animals
10.7 Summary
This chapter has provided a basic introduction to the treatments available for aquatic animals and how the drugs, pesticides, and biologics used in aquatic animals are regulated primarily in the United States. To successfully use the products described in this chapter some simple rules will summarize the areas covered:
- Make an accurate diagnosis whenever possible to choose the best product more accurately.
- Chose a regulated product for the etiology of the diagnosis.
- Read the product’s label to confirm it has been evaluated and marketed for the species, etiology, in the manner of treatment needed, and at the dosage needed.
- Periodically revisit regulators website for latest information on usage of the product. Direct links to regulatory websites containing the regulations and requirements at the time of writing are provided to obtain greater details by those that begin working with these treatments. Federal agencies can revise regulations without much prior notice.
- If an off label use is needed, have a licensed practicing veterinarian prescribe the use under a VCPR. The veterinarian will make certain the product is legal to use in the food fish.
Remember: “What was legal last time a drug, pesticide, or biologic was used may not be legal or permitted in food fish today. Conversely, an amended regulation or new product may be permitted today.”
Regulated treatment products described in this chapter are safe, pure, and efficacious when used as directed on the label, and sold for the treating listed species for diseases evaluated before marketing is permitted. Treatments save many animals. Treatments improve the health and welfare of livestock. Treatments work best IF started early.
