12.0 Biosecurity for Aquatic Livestock Production
Additional Biosecurity Resources
One of this author’s go-to references is Aquaculture Biosecurity: Prevention, Control, and Eradication of Animal Disease by A. David Scarfe, Cheng-Sheng Lee, and Patricia J. O’Bryen (2008). This book is relatively recent and covers in more depth some of the areas covered in this chapter.
Reviewing and comparing other animal production industries’ approaches to biosecurity is often useful. In the United States, the pork and egg industries are a significant portion of agriculture’s economy. The relative size results from robust disease control methods and processes that have evolved over the years. Thus, these two industries are well-developed in their biosecurity plans and efforts. Below are the links for pork (Secure Pork) and poultry (Poultry Biosecurity & Poultry Improvement) teaching materials. I would encourage anyone looking for ideas or additional information to take a look and learn from other industries’ successful pathogen management:
- Secure Pork Supply Outreach Materials.
- Poultry Biosecurity.
- Official Training on the NPIP Program Standards Biosecurity Principles [PDF]
- Big Red Biosecurity, University of Nebraska, Lincoln: This resource is also poultry-focused. They have a few training modules designed for producers and animal caregivers. It is also a great resource for someone wanting to develop their biosecurity plan. On the biosecurity resources tab, they even have biosecurity templates and links for other industries, including aquaculture.
