This chapter starts with a reminder that the potential to inadvertently purchase disease comes with purchasing livestock. In this regard, pathogens can be considered to be part of the economic exchange. Pathogens and sick animals have been synonymous with buying and selling animals for millennia. Producers may unintentionally pay for sick livestock if proper precautions are not taken. In other words, “Buyer beware.”
