After a Fall

these scars are not trophies
to be displayed with pride
nor must they be hidden away

they will be there and change
but slowly in these shortening days

not even a bumper crop
of fallen buckeyes
nor an afternoon hooting
of a Great Horned Owl
can change the fact
that the regrowth around the break
will strengthen
but the telling signs
never disappear
