East of Webster City

having learned a little something
about late summer love
I can tell them that
bright finches will bear gifts of thistledown
to sweetly line the nest of their hearts conjoined
while their blessing prayers fly skyward
with the help of a fine feather fan
decorated with soft ewe’s wool
and that night
at least one old billy goat
will be dancing with joy
