1.1 Basics of Rhythm: Aural Training exercises

Listen to each rhythmic example and follow the steps below:

Step 1) Clap the pulse (tactus) as you listen to the rhythm of each exercise (keep it steady!). Listen several times until you have the rhythm memorized. The rhythm is repeated four times on each recording.

Step 2) Clap the pulse and “ta” the rhythm back on proper syllables, keeping in mind which syllables to use for simple verses compound meters. Repeat each exercise until you can ta the rhythm smoothly and steadily without changing the pulse.

Step 3) Reverse it: ta the steady pulse and clap the rhythms back.
