Listen to each two-measure exercise, either in simply-quadruple or simple-compound time
Step 1) Conduct the pulse through both measures from beginning to end.
Step 2) Conduct and ta straight sixteenth notes from beginning to end (e.g. “1-ta-te-ta, 2-ta-te-ta, 3…” for 4/4 time or “1-ta-la-ta-li-ta, 2-ta-la-ta-li-ta, 3…” for 12/8), listening to where the rhythm lies within each beat.
Step 3) Once you’ve memorized each rhythm, conduct a full measure to set your tempo and ta it back while conducting.
